Dr. Uysal is a graduate of Hacettepe University in Ankara, Turkey where he obtained his doctoral degree in pediatric dentistry. He is currently a full-time associate professor at the Department of Dentomaxillofasial Radiology at Hacettepe University. He lectures on conventional radiology, digital imaging, advanced imaging and image analysis in dentistry. He is an associate editor in the Clinical Dentistry and Researh which was official publication of the Hacettepe University Faculty of Dentistry.

 

Cone Beam Computed Tomography in Clinical Practice

 

Radiological imaging techniques have important role in establishing orthodontic diagnosis, treatment planning and evaluating treatment outcomes. A wide variety of radiological techniques are used in orthodontics. In recent years, cone-beam computed tomography is frequently used for the planning of orthodontic surgery. Besides, cone-beam computed tomography is used for describing the morphology of facial skeleton, determining the direction of growth, in treatment planning and evaluation of results, diagnosis of temporomandibular joint diseases, evaluation of the jawbones in three dimensions and cleft-pale, in determining the location of ectopic teeth, root resorption, dimensional changes and orientation of anatomical structures and in airway analysis in orthodontics.
When the adverse effects of radiation are taken into consideration, cone-beam computed tomography should be used carefully and patients should be exposed to a minimum x-ray.
