Is it Possible to Prevent Long Term Implant Loss in Periimplantitis?

Peri-implant diseases can be occurred due to an imbalance between bacterial destruction and peri-implant tissues after a successful osseointegration of dental implants. Peri-implant mucositis is a reversible inflammatory reaction and peri-implantitis irreversible destruction of supportive bone and/or soft tissues around implants. The loss of bone in osseointegrated implants is seen because of a bacterial inflammation caused by biofilm. This problem can lead to the loss of implants and failure in prosthetic rehabilitation in short or long term. The patients may lose their trust for the implant therapy. The etiology of peri-implant mucositis and peri-implantitis, current treatment options and long term success of peri-implant treatment is attractive subjects nowadays. Not only implant surgery but also long term function and maintenance of implants should also be well known by the dental professionals.
