Possible Mechanisms of Interaction Between Periodontitis and Hyperglycemia

Severe periodontitis is the sixth most common chronic disease worldwide, and its prevalence is likely to increase with the increasing life span. Periodontitis is an infectious and inflammatory disease that affects the supporting tissues of teeth. The major etiological factor in the pathogenesis of periodontitis is the microbial dental plaque. If left untreated, severe periodontitis may cause tooth loss and impair the functions of the dentition, such as chewing, speaking as well as facial aesthetics. Periodontitis contributes to the overall inflammatory burden of the individual, which is strongly implicated in systemic diseases such as diabetes mellitus. Common systemic diseases like uncontrolled DM may affect the occurrence and severity of periodontitis as well as the response to periodontal treatment.
