Modern Clinical Possibilities in Direct Restorative Dentistry
Promoting better quality of life is the new paradigm in healthcare. Caries management has evolved to a more holistic approach aiming for the preservation of tooth structure. This can be achieved through the proper use of modern restorative techniques and materials. Each clinical situation, however, has to be carefully evaluated before the most appropriate treatment option is defined. In many clinical circumstances, modern bioactive and biomimetic restoratives will certainly be the material of choice thanks to their ability to intimately interact with dental hard tissues promoting heath care in its most holistic sense. On the other side, more resistant materials may be needed whenever the tooth needs to be protected against crack propagation and fractures. But in this sense, what would be the limit between direct and indirect restorations? To get the most of each restorative treatment, it is crucial that the dentist can differentiate among the various kinds of modern materials, their indications, and how to use them correctly. These aspects will be presented in this lecture, as well as the latest developments in restorative dentistry.
Dr. Marcio Vivan Cardoso graduated as a dentist at Sao Paulo University, Brazil, in 1997. At the same institution, he obtained his Master (MSc) and Doctorate (PhD) degrees in 2003 and 2007 respectively, both in the area of Restorative Dentistry. Besides pursuing experience as a dentist in both public and private sectors, he has been intensively involved in the academic formation of undergraduation students at Sao Paulo University and continuing education of dental surgeons as a lecturer and professor at different institutions, always focusing the areas of dental materials, minimal intervention dentistry and aesthetic dentistry. After his PhD, Dr. Vivan Cardoso was appointed as Pos-Doctorate Researcher at the Catholic University of Leuven, Belgium, where he conducted research in the area of biomaterials. He has produced a considerable number of scientific articles published in different international peer-reviewed journals. He is also the author of book chapters in the area of Dental Materials and collaborates as a reviewer for international peer-reviewed journals. Dr. Vivan Cardoso is nowadays part of the academic staff of the Department of Oral Health of the Catholic University of Leuven, Belgium, as a Clinical Resident/Instructor.
