How Successful Are Antioxidants İn Periodontal Therapy?

Periodontitis is a chronic inflammatory disease affecting all popuplations all over the world and oxidative stress is the key to different signaling pathways controlling inflammation. Also, periodontitis is associated with low serum/plasma micronutrient levels and high reactive oxygen radicals. Several studies found that diets rich in refined carbohydrates and saturated fats are pro-inflammatory, whereas those rich in polyunsaturated fats, antioxidant micronutrients are anti-inflammatory.
Although numerous studies evaluated the relationship between micronutrients and periodontal disease, intervention studies in humans are increasing in recent years. In relation to periodontal disease, number of  studies have been conducted and include vitamin C and E, carotenoids, polyphenols, flavonoids and other pyhtonutrients. There is a body of evidence from cross-sectional studies that support the potential to improve periodontal outcomes by using dietary antioxidants. In this lecture will discuss antioxidants and their clinical consequences in the treatment of periodontal diseases.
