Antibiotic Therapy in Implant Dentistry: When and Why?

Dental Implants have revolutionized the field of dentistry for the rehabilitation of partially or fully-edentulous patients.  Dentists and dental specialists have been placing implants in healthy and medically-compromised patients.

Although dental implants have been used for several decades, controversies still exist related to the necessity of antibiotic therapy associated with their use.  This presentation will provide a critical overview of the use of antibiotic therapy in implant dentistry, as well as, attempt to provide guidelines for the use of antibiotics, based on the most recent evidence-based scientific literature, therefore, contributing to the decision-making process related to antibiotic use in implant dentistry.
