Removal of Wisdom Teeth. Pitfalls and Management of Complications

Wisdom tooth removal is considered as one of the most performed surgery in dental practice. They can be found either asymptomatic or symptomatic as erupted, partially erupted/impacted, and impacted in the jaws. Lower third molars may cause periodontal problems in the adjacent molars, and lead to cavities, resorptions, pericoronitis, cysts and tumors or atypical facial pain in individuals. No consensus has been established on the removal of asymptomatic third molars so far. However it is widely considered that prophylactic removal in the early stages of life may increase the potential of complications as well as the postoperative morbidity.

A number of factors may affect the difficulty of the third molar extraction as the level of the impaction is one of the main factors. Deeper the third molar tooth lays, harder to approach the operation area makes a more difficult operation on the parallel. The complication rates get higher when the difficulty increases. Thorough examination with a proper radiological evaluation may reduce the risk of complications and medico-legal challenges. This presentation will discuss the evaluation of the difficulty of the operation, pitfalls, precautions and management of complications during and after third molar surgery.
