The use of sedation and general anesthesia in dentistry

There are different methods for patients who are in lack of co-operation with the dentist. These are psychological and pharmacological approaches. Psychological techniques, also known as behaviour management, are practiced by most of the dentists. In these techniques, the success of the dentist depends mostly on the ability to communicate and gain the confidence of the patient. Pharmacological method; the application of certain medications to provide sedation, analgesia, or general anesthesia when psychological approaches are inadequate. Despite the fact that sedation in dentistry is practiced by the dentists all over the world with the necessary training and adequate equipment, due to the legal problems and lack of institutions to provide education in our country, our dentists cannot benefit from these methods at a sufficient level and therefore the dentists are helpless in many patients who have cooperative problems. The purpose of this lecture is to view the general perspective on the way to general anesthesia from the sedative methods, to examine the practices in the world and to discuss about the necessary training and appropriate equipment.
